Job Description:
The role:

Are you bold, innovative, and persistent? YSS needs a Development Director who knows how to bring our impact to life by speaking from the heart and effectively telling the story of YSS to support our mission.

The Development Director, reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Engagement, and part of the Community Engagement Team, is focused on driving fundraising efforts to bring hope and opportunity to youth and families. If you are a natural people person, compelled to connect donors to the causes that matter most to them, this is the role for you. Responsibilities include growing the YSS Impact Circle membership through increased annual giving, securing endowment and planned gifts, as well as networking, nurturing, and delivering major gifts to support our capital campaigns. The ability to prioritize and strategize is required. The Development Director will work closely with the development team to ensure YSS’s donor database CRM (Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge) is consistently updated, fully utilized, and capable of providing real-time reports to assist with forecasting and pipeline management. The Development Director will work closely with the Community Based Center Director of Iowa Homeless Youth Center (IHYC) in Des Moines and the CEO on lead referrals and relationship management, collaborating to best ensure a successful close. Experience in sales outside of the nonprofit arena is welcome!

What you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, public relations, philanthropic studies, or a related field.
  • At least four (4) years of related experience.
  • At least 21 years old with a valid driver's license to meet requirements to drive agency vehicles.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and strategize with proven success in sales or fundraising, especially as it relates to planned giving and major gifts.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated while performing job requirements.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues.
  • Attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and basic computer skills.

What you will do:
  • Implement a comprehensive annual giving and gift program with an emphasis on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and securing of gifts.
  • Operate within a “sales team” structure, being willing to prospect, be resistant to rejection, and be highly motivated to continually drive toward goals.
  • Determine the best means to solicit major and planned gifts.
  • Develop and execute suitable strategies specifically for donors that are compatible with the defined case and the financial goals of YSS.
  • Create a well-articulated case statement for private gift support based on funding priorities and develop and implement an annual plan to maximize private gift support.
  • Develop lists of prospective major gift donors by researching YSS donor files, and setting priorities for visits and contacts.
  • Develop and implement a collaborative plan to support development by training volunteers in fundraising by identifying and evaluating prospective sources.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with potential donors by making visits to learn about their interests and then matching them to the appropriate YSS program, service, and/or needs.
  • Lead development and evolution of the YSS Impact Circle while cultivating new and existing members.
  • Write articles and reports about agency impact and planned giving opportunities.
  • Work with the Community Engagement Team to plan and host special informational, educational, cultivation, and recognition events for current or prospective donors.
  • Initiate recognition and gratitude correspondence (thank you cards, birthday wishes, get-well cards, etc.) with all donors and prospects as appropriate.
  • Maintain complete records of all prospect interactions via Raiser’s Edge and report progress to committees.
  • Staff the Foundation Board Development and Nominating Committee and make recommendations for and maintain a list of trustee prospects.
  • Direct donors to experts to answer any legal or tax questions.
  • Offer support and assistance to families when notified of a donor's death and attend funerals and visitations.
  • Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations (MIPG, AFP, SCAP).
  • Attend applicable training opportunities for continuing education and stay informed through journals, media, professional seminars, and other activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
