BASIC FUNCTION: The Small Business and Member Support Manager with the Greater Des Moines Partnership provides leadership and development of focused learning opportunities for Members, empowering business owners to find the resources they need to grow their business in Greater Des Moines, as well as programs and strategies to support and engage community partners. This position requires exceptional written and verbal communications skills. The ability to stay organized and assist others in this area is at a premium. This position is responsible for curating educational programs, supporting small businesses, engaging with community partners and others within the ecosystem of the Business Resources scope of work. The position requires the ability to work on deadlines frequently and the flexibility to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides direction and general assistance to small businesses.
  • Creates and executes educational offerings to support member business needs.
  • Develops a corps of qualified volunteers and experts to assist in program delivery.
  • Gathers feedback and data in an intentional and regular manner to inform future deliverables.
  • Coordinates meetings with stakeholders and volunteers to advance local initiatives.
    • Proactively invites other diverse communities to be a part of the growing efforts.
  • Maintains a personal working relationship with all relevant community leaders including but not limited to investors, chamber of commerce partners, small business community leaders, mentors, advisors, service providers and other stakeholders.
  • Attend relevant meetings and events to share information, as well as to gain knowledge of programs and policies that impact area businesses.
  • Leads efforts to elevate awareness of the value of supporting local businesses.
  • Helps tell the DSM story by identifying successes of local businesses and unique aspects of DSM communities; assistance with blog content.
  • Staff events that may be outside of normal business hours.
  • Organizes programs, events and gatherings in a variety of locations and formats.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Communications, Marketing or related field. 

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Interpersonal skills for interacting effectively with a diverse clientele and the small business community
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be detail oriented, self-starter and be able to multi-task.
  • Highly adaptable and can work well with others and within a team, both internally and externally.    
  • Is familiar with small business services and resources, preferably in Central Iowa.
  • Comfortable presenting to groups.
  • Participative and collaborative work style; ability to receive constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage workload.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Travel within the ten-county region required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (SIGNIFICANT LIFTING/STANDING/SITTING):

  • Significant sitting, standing, talking and hearing. Occasionally required to lift or move objects and materials as required by various projects. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
